Before You Go — Practical Tips

Essential details and advice for planning a safe, comfortable tour to these remote valleys.

Permits (ILP)

Mandatory for Niti, Vyas, and Darma valleys. You can obtain them free of charge from the SDM office in Joshimath or Dharchula. Always carry multiple photocopies for ITBP checkpoints.

Cash & Connectivity

There are no ATMs beyond Sankri, Joshimath, or Dharchula. Mobile networks are patchy to completely absent past the last major town. Withdraw sufficient cash and inform families in advance.

Vehicles & Roads

Roads are maintained by the BRO but are narrow and highly weather-dependent. A sturdy 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended for travels beyond Netwar, Malari, and Gunji.

Altitude & Health

Many villages are located above 3,000–3,600 m. Acclimatize for at least a day at the base, stay well-hydated, avoid alcohol, and monitor closely for symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Winter Access

Most villages experience heavy snowfall and are cut off or evacuated from Nov/Dec to April. It is highly recommended to plan your vacation visits between May and November.

Stay & Food

Expect simple, rustic homestays and GMVN/KMVN tourist rest houses rather than commercial hotels. Meals consist of home-cooked local crops (dal, rajma, mandua roti, fresh greens).
